Red Mountain Academy, Rossland, British Columbia

Locations

Located in the Kootenay Rockies Region of beautiful British Columbia, Red Mountain Academy offers a full-spectrum package to both competitive athletes and students enrolled in the ESL and recreational programs who want to experience all that the region has to offer.

Red Mountain Academy, in partnership with SelfDesign Learning Community offers a learner-centered, inquiry-based education approach, including the entire B.C. grade 8-12 high school graduation program, as well as a diverse suite of dynamic independent study choices and community initiatives. SelfDesign Learning Community is an independent distributed learning school and an internationally recognized and award-winning leader in the field of education including the “Prime Minister’s Award for Excellence in Education Innovation.” This approach to learning gives students the flexibility to pursue their interests in either competitive ski/snowboard training or recreational activities in the region.

Competitive athletes in 4 snow sports (alpine ski racing, free skiing, snowboarding and nordic skiing) receive professional sport training 5 days a week, a complete dryland training program and a seamless approach to their education and athletic training schedule. Coaches and teachers communicate regularly to ensure the program is best suiting the needs of the student/athlete. Red Mountain Academy hires only the best industry coaches with a wide variety of experiences like; former Canadian National Team head nordic coach, performance level race coaches, CSIA level 4 instructors, senior CSIA level coarse conductor, former inter ski team member and former program director for the CSIA.

Red Mountain Resort has long been known as one of Canada’s most respected resort destinations and the last great, unspoiled resort. In fact, Skiing Magazine recently named RED as the “Most Underrated Resort”. Red’s legendary skiing offers beginner slopes to steeps to treed chutes, all a mere 5 minutes from Rossland and along the famous ‘Powder Highway’. RED delivers 4,200 acres of pristine skiing unfettered by overdevelopment. For 2013-14, RED added nearly 1,000 acres of terrain on Grey Mountain – an entirely new peak. RED receives 300″/7.6m of annual snowfall and offers wide-open groomers, epic vertical (2,919ft / 890m), in-bounds cat-skiing, 360 degree descents off select peaks, and the best tree runs in BC to enjoy it on.

Students enrolled in the ESL and recreational programs require no previous sports experience to attend the Academy. They will have the opportunity to fully experience the Rossland and West Kootenay region through alpine skiing, snowboarding, cross-country skiing, hockey, snowshoeing, mountain biking, hiking, curling, golf, wildlife viewing, etc. Recreational activities will work directly into their academic schedule and plan, allowing students to deepen their inquiry based learning and entrench themselves into the local community.

At Red Mountain Academy we have chosen to accommodate our visiting students and athletes in family homestay environments. We feel that being part of a family is one of the best ways we can make the transition smooth for students living away from home. Combined with the small and friendly atmosphere of the town itself, we find that homestay families provide a close personal connection. Homestay parents play a vital role in helping us meet the needs of the students.

Whenever possible we place visiting athletes in a home with a family that is also involved in sport, or who has a deep understanding of the specific needs of an athlete. Many times homestay families house students each year for several years, making them a great resource for the student and their family back home.
