A great place to live
Calgary, Alberta is a vibrant, cosmopolitan city of over 1,000,000 people. Friendly, clean and safe, it has a high standard of living. Calgary is one hour away from the world famous Canadian Rocky Mountains. Calgary offers a wide variety of outdoor activities, cultural attractions and more.
International students are placed in schools where there is space and program availability. You may request a specific school and we will make every attempt to accommodate your request. However, Global Learning Services has the right to make the final placement decision. Please note that not all Calgary schools can accept international students.
The Calgary Board of Education works with Canada Homestay Network (CHN) to place students with excellent host families in the City of Calgary. The process for admitting host families into the homestay program is a rigorous one.
All families:
- have had a thorough interview to determine suitability;
- have had a homestay inspection;
- have had references checked;
- passed a police record check;
- are enthusiastic to receive international students
Once the student is placed in the home, supervision and support are provided by CHN’s Relationship Managers throughout the program. International students and their parents have access to the Relationship Managers 24 hours a day in the event of a problem or emergency.
Study at the Calgary Board of Education
We welcome international students from around the world into our excellent programs and schools. International students are placed into the school that best matches their interests and abilities. Calgary Board of Education staff carefully review the application and work closely with school principals to select the most appropriate school and program.
Once international students arrive at the school they work with a school counsellor to select courses. International students are encouraged to join extracurricular activities including clubs or sports teams.
We follow the Alberta program of studies. Students who successfully complete high school courses are eligible to receive Alberta credits toward an Alberta high school diploma.
English as a second language
When your first language is different than English, you first learn English to talk to friends, buy things, or find your way around the city. This is everyday English, and usually takes one to two years to learn. Next, you learn academic English – reading, writing, understanding, and talking about complex ideas in English. This may take five or more years. Academic English learned in English as Second Language (ESL) courses contribute to success in high school, post-secondary, and future employment.
