The Peace River North School District, Fort St John, British Columbia

Locations

The Peace River North School District is located on the eastern side of the Rocky Mountains in the northern tip of the Canadian Prairies. The region’s economy is both prosperous and expanding. This positive economic outlook is based on the petro-chemical, agriculture, forestry, tourism and commercial/service industries. The availability of employment has an impact on the secondary student population with estimates of 70% of our secondary students working between 14 and 40 hours weekly.

We are a forward-looking northern BC School District. The district is noted for its innovative educational practices, and the excellent cooperative relationship, which exists between all its educational partners.

The district encompasses rural, semi-rural and urban areas. Its population of 5900 students is served by 20 schools of varying sizes. The schools range from the one-room country schoolhouse to an ultra modern senior secondary with over 950 students. One elementary school, one junior secondary school and the senior secondary school offer students French Immersion as an option.

Our staff includes a full range of administrators, teachers, specialists andsupport personnel. All schools offer a variety of extracurricular sports and cultural activities.

In addition to the extracurricular activities offered at each school, we encourage international students to become involved in countless recreational activities within the community. Numerous clubs and organizations around Fort St John cater student interests. Local recreation centres feature swimming pools, ice skating, speed skating, gyms and a variety of sports and special interest programs.
